Not Forgotten in Sugar House

Last Report has Sister Whitlock back in Salt Lake City in the SugarHouse area.

Mailing address is still the same ol' Mission Home, but we like to write

Sister Whitlock
Tooele UT Mission
3487 S 1300 East
Salt Lake City, UT 84106

The "Tooele" line doesn't change delivery, but gives the mail screener something to think about.

I'll have to post more when I'm done on the my new printer support pages

I didn't just finish, I blogged it

I have a new blog about books that I'm reading. Sort of a marketing project, and sort of a list where I keep track of things I've read.

Not a complete list, but there are some good reviews. And of course, my Book of Mormon review

Another Tory Sighting

20 August 2005

There are Two Salt Lake City Missions.. really.

We've heard several stoires in letters that keep us convinced that Sister Whitlock and her compainions are not representing the Church at Temple Square.

Yet, photos like this keep appearing:

Judging from the 'tude in this one, perhaps it's best they keep these Sisters away from the tourists.

Do The Work That Counts

In case there's any doubt from viewing the Bear City photos, this blog is not intended to be a journal of missionary work, and certainly not anything to do with official preaching of the Gospel.

We do get some great faith promoting stories from time to time, and know that our daughter is working most of time. These things just aren't as much fun to post on the net.

Anyway, we got this photo of Sister Whitlock and her two companions making good use of the odd number in their companionship.. and doing what counts.

Bear City Photos Arrive

As I mentioned in the previous post, T Sean Shannon has learned of what great Bear City fan Sister Whitlock and the rest of the family are.

Sister Whitlock hasn't seen the new episodes since February of course, but she always been the biggest fan in the family, so she got the T-Shirt and photo from Mr. Shannon.

Seen here are the official logo shirt and a bear doing what people do.

Maybe not the most "missionary like" poses.. but we're still hoping when more episodes appear, there will be bear missionaries included.. riding bikes, teaching people in the park, and joining a large family on the front row at Church.

Wrapping Up the TV Story

Some time back, I reported that we thought Sister Whitlock would be on TV.

From a very long audio tape we received this week, the answer is yes.. and no.

The missionaries from the SLC area were all in some football stadium for many hours, and then held glow sticks up at the end of some celebration. We understand that Tory was on camera behind Assistants to the President and close to President Hinckley.

This apparently was some big deal Pioneer Day celebration.. not the Prophet's 95th birthday, another long program that was mostly aired on the BYU-TV cable channel.

We got a 90 minute tape out of the process, so we were pleased, and enjoyed two good naps in the process.

T Sean Shannon and Sister Whitlock

[should be read while listening to this Bear City Theme Song]

As I've stated before, Sister Whitlock and the Sister Whitlock Web Site are fans of the Bear City films on Saturday Night Live.

Sister Whitlock reports that T Sean Shannon, creator of the films is now a fan of this web site.. and has sent a T shirt and note to her.

No exactly a missionary moment.. in fact, one could say this whole site is not a missionary topic.. still, we're honored that the Shannon family knows we're here.

If you aren't yet a Bear City fan, here's the best web page about it I could find:

The former Sister Whitlock

I snapped this photo of my sister Annita, who was the "Sister Whitlock" missionary a few years back.

She was instructed to be saying "Hi Tory" when I snapped it, so I suppose it has some cosmic connection quality that makes up for the camera phone lack of quality.

Explaining the humor of the funny Rabbit Joke

The rabbit joke rocks!

Explaining the humor of the funny Rabbit Joke

Look what showed up on my phone

I'm sitting at home, minding my business, when the phone makes a weird noise.

It said I had a picture.

Of course, she's EATING!

But Sister Whitlock doesn't have a phone, and she's in the picture.

Do the camera phone people of Salt Lake City know my number?

Cousin Matt Departs

Today, Elder Whitlock joins Sister Whitlock in the mission field.

Studying Japanese to go teach in Japan and eat a lot of sushi.

Yea for Matt!

Another TORY sighting

I'm going to have to start contacting people and get the spellin' right.

Sister Whitlock is nowhere near this intersection, but in our thought and prayers always.

11 July 2005

Will she be on TV?

Sister Whitlock tells me she is practicing to sing in a special choir with the Tabernacle Choir.

A Celebration of Life!
On July 22, the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will present A Celebration of Life! in honor of President Hinckley's 95th birthday.

Will she be on the TV broadcast?

Watch and find out.

Mom is Proud

We got to talk in Church.. only a few references to our missionary, so I'll avoid the details here.. but it was a good opportunity to show Jahn (Sister Whitlock's Mom) bragging on her missionary.

That's me in the relection

04 July 2005

Sister Whitlock rides the "Tory Flyer"

We don't have any sightings of two missionaries wearing dresses and riding bikes.. but we know it happens.

We did get this one close up of the garb that goes with a bike.

Since there is a cord on the phone, we assume that she was not riding when the photo was taken.

Rabbit Joke Explained

As far as I know, there are less than five people on Earth who really understand the Rabbit Joke.

Since Sister Whitlock is currently engaged in much more important activities, the duty to explain it falls on me. Please click on the link below

Whitlock Family Tradition

Sister Whitlock isn't the only missionary in the family.

Cousin Matt Whitlock got a call to Sapporo Japan today.. He reports on July 20th.

Way to go Matt!

11 May 2005

Promotional Photos?

Sister Whitlock went to Temple Square on her day off, and sent us these standard missionary photos.

If someone calls asking for a shot to use in a brochure, we're all set.

08 May 2005

Mother's Day

Sister Whitlock called her mother for mom's day.

Mom tried to use up the whole time, but I did grab a few minutes. What a treat.

Mostly rehashing news we all knew, but I could talk to Tory for days on end.

The pressing question was "why do you sing when you go to the store' and learned it was the one brother I didn't ask that was the source (Zack).. which led to me sharing my all time favorite joke.

Pay attention.. you'll get it if you concentrate:

Oscar the Rabbit says to Mabel the Rabbit: "Please had me the soap"

Mable the Rabbit replies: "We have no soap"

Then, Oscar the
Rabbit replies, in an angry voice: "Well then, no soap, no
radio"
Sister Whitlock laughed her head off the first time I told it. Most people need to have it expalned again and again, and some don't get it until it's dramatized.

That's my kid!

I'm so proud of my missionay daughter.. ant not just because she gets my jokes.

25 April 2005

Crazy for TRACTING

Along with the "bear attack" story below, we received a photo of snow eating, and a penguin.

We were beginning to wonder about the missionary work.. then found this photo in the stack, with the caption "I love to go tracting"

Looks like she is enjoying the work.

Bear Attack!

The reports you've heard are true... Sister Whitlock was attacked by a bear.

If you've followed my postings, or met Tory before her mission, you've undoubtedly have heard about her passion for "Bear City"... so it's no surprise for us to learn that she approached a bear in a Utah Jazz uniform on the way to the parking lot after a recent conference.

She tried to talk to the bear, and get a picture to send us, forgetting that even in Bear City, bears can't talk (same rule applies to people in bear suits working as mascots).

As you see her, the bear was so excited to meet Sister Amazing Tory Whitlock that he grabbed her and gave her a big bear hug.

Sister Whitlock was unharmed by the attack, but the bear will never be the same.

13 April 2005

Another Sighting

Is this just the reamblings of a proud father?

Or are the hints of Tory all over the place.

Here's a street sign from Chicagoland..

HItting the Road

Woah!

It's been a busy couple of weeks for us, I went to Las Vegas, Chicago, had the laptop die on me, back to Vegas, then California and a half dozen more trips to and from.

As the saying goes "I've changed my hairstyle so many times.. I don't know what I look like"

There's some news for future posts.. but for now.. here's a hint of the secret plan. Should I tell Sister Whitlock?

27 March 2005

Elder Milgioli Comes to Rialto

We were introduced to a new Elder at the Rialto 1st Ward meeting today.

Elder Milgioli from Price, UT and comes to us fresh from the MTC.

Sure enough, he remembers meeting Sister Whitlock, who he said told him all about San Bernardino... and he still went through with it!

It was news to me, bu Hollan showed me a letter about this. She "instructed" a whole gouup of missionaries bound for San Bernardino.

26 March 2005

Hoping Taylorsville is in the District

At the Whitlock family picnic, we talked to by brother Kurt, Evelyn, Amanda, Fonda and Scott Whitlock about their missionary experiences. Probably best not to post those.

They live in Taylorsville, about a 1.5 miles from the Mall. Pretty close to West Valley.

Evelyn wanted to know if it would break any rules from them to invite Sister Whitlock and companion to dinner. I said, "I think that's why they have missionaries in Salt Lake"

They have large dogs who enjoy missionaries.. espeially the sweet ones.

I'm posting photos.. Tory's grandpa is in the last one, but not in Taylorsville.

Sharing the SisterWhitlock.com Experience

I went to the annual Whitlock family picnic today. Told everyone about my missionary and sisterwhitlock.com.

There are many more of us than the few that come.. here's some the clan:

Tall ones are Sister Whitlock's Brothers.
(Cam, Zack & Hollan) My cousin Debbie and her
mom Ada are in their too.

25 March 2005

Impossible Photo From MTC

Tory left her camera in my car. So we shipped it to her at the MTC.

Somehow, she managed to take a picture of herself opening that package

A REAL Missionary Letter!

We finally heard from Sister Whitlock in the field.

On her first day, she didn't track, but taught a lesson to a investigator that gave up smoking and coffee after reading the Book of Mormon, saying "it just didn't feel right"

The typical complints of missionaries were there.. members don't care enough, want all the work done by the missionaries for them, and the Ward Mission leader is crazy.

She's fitting right in.. here's Sister Whitlock at the grocery store.

Letter from the Mission President

We received a nice letter from the SLC Mission President today.

He told us about Sister Greer, from Maryland who is training Sister Whitlock, and confirmed that all mail must go throught the mission office

Sister Whitlock
Utah Salt Lake City Mission
3487 South 1300 East
Salt Lake City, UT 84108-2951

We got a "guidelines" list that says we're not supposed to talk about problems, just encourage the missionary and share our love. Seems to me that a missionary with problems at home would be wondering all the time why no one talks about them.

I decided it was best not to write back and tell him that our problem has been shipped to SLC. I learned from my own letters to my mission president that they don't have a sense of humor about these things.

21 March 2005

Assigned to West Valley

I heard today that Sister Whitlock is assigned to the Salt Lake City West Valley Stake.

Nothing else.. just that. Sounds like a Stake name.. but I can't find any record of it on the net. We'll have to keep checking the mail.

So, we know she's out there doing good work. That's good enough for now.

20 March 2005

In Transition

Letter's from Tory indicate that she loved to work the telemarketing center while in the MTC. She liked being able to do something instead of sit in training all day.

Sister Whitlock shipped out to SLC on March 16th. A brief note on Mission letterhead about meating the President and starting work after lunch was all we got this week.

We still assume letters addressed to Sister Whitlock, c/o the Mission home, well be received on a timely basis.. not like they have to travel in a pouch around the world

MTC Coming to an End

Nothing here as exciting as a meteor hitting Earth, but a few new items to ponder.

1. Sister Whitlock departs the MTC as we thought.. March 16th. Letter tell us nothing about her teeth, so we assume she's just fine.. except for wear and tear on the knees.

2. No news where in the greater Salt Lake City, rural Utah and Wyoming environs that she will next serve.

3. This one is almost news.. at least I didn't expect it. A new episode of "Bear City" appears tonight on Saturday Night Live. As previously noted, this has nothing to do with preaching the Gospel.

4. It's true, the family bought a house and decided to be in a different state while returning from the trip to take Sister Whitlock to the MTC. She has 18 months to get our new address

5. Cell phones don't turn off when your friend tries to put new service on the phone. You can still call Tory's number at this point (to be rectified any moment).

That's what passes for news around here.

11 March 2005

We Sing the Song, but Never Teach Them

When a meteor strike drives humanity into underground shelters, the bears take over...

I've checked thoroughly.

There is no "Bear City" in the Utah Salt Lake City mission

05 March 2005

Survivors Unite

We went to Tara's wedding, and I finally got a chance to see a group of people from the Young Adult ward and make arrangement to post this site's URL there.

It was nice to chat with people who acutally miss Tory more than her siblings

01 March 2005

First Letter Arrived

I just read my first ever letter home from a missionary.

As letters go, it's just okay.. but what joy for use to hear little tidbits like:
  1. I've got a companion from Provo
  2. They treat us well
  3. I'm glad I'm here
She swears that after two days, she hasn't heard them quote D&C 4.. I guess missionary training has advanced since my time.

Shopping on the way to the MTC

The Guys at Hub Cap City

We stopped to get a picture with Uncle John, and met Dwayne, owner of Hub Cap City. There aren't any bears.. just wheels and hub caps.

27 February 2005

Welcome!

This is the first post on my new SISTER WHITLOCK blog web site.

Tory reported to the MTC to serve her 18 month mission starting Feb 23rd 2005.

I'm going to post photos and other public content concerning Sister Whitlock and her adventures as a LDS missionary.

Please check back soon.
